Ancient Passageway
Northern San Rafael Style Fremont 750 A.D. to 1250 A.D.
Nine Mile Canyon, Carbon County
This complex panel is cut into the darkest patina in Nine Mile Canyon. The design elements reveal a sophisticated sense of composition. The panel faces the confluence of several
streams and five routes out of the canyon: Dry Canyon, Cottonwood Canyon, Big Daddy, and Nine Mile leading west to the plateau and east to the Green River.
Once a prime hunting and agricultural site, now the ancient passageway is thoroughfare for enormous trucks heading up Cottonwood Canyon to wells on the plateau. The panel is also near the possible site for a natural gas compressor station. The BLM is allowing the ancient passageway to become an industrial access route.
