Solstice Sunset
Northern San Rafael Style Fremont 750 A.D. to 1250 A.D.
Nine Mile Canyon, Carbon County
A summer solstice sunset briefly lights this pictograph usually submerged in shadow. The circles near the figures hearts are original, not bullet holes. The Fremont lived aware of what we call horizon astronomy, the locations where the sun, moon and constellations appear and disappear. I try to capture the relationship between the sites and the sun with my spinning camera.
Located a safe distance from the dirt road, this pictograph on private property is amazingly fresh. I’ve been asked not to use the pictograph’s geographic name.
